When following the steps outlined here the resulting desktop will be the one created during installation of the system. Any objects added by the user are not lost but preserved and may be moved to the newly built desktop later. This is kind of a last resort desktop maintainance trick when your INI files are completely broken and none of the known INI tools is able to recover them properly.

  1. Create a copy of your current INI files, just in case...
  2. Boot to a command line by pressing ALT-F1 when the white square appears in the upper left corner during boot
  3. Go to the directory holding your INI files which is usually OS2 on your boot drive
  4. Run makini.exe os2.ini ini.rc to create the first INI file
  5. Run makini.exe os2sys.ini inisys.rc to create the other INI file
  6. Reboot

The system should drop you on a new desktop with some objects already created. Part two is to recreate all the objects built during initial installation.

  1. Open a command line and go to x:\ecs\install, where x is your boot drive
  2. Run CLNDESK.EXE x:\ecs\install\rsp\shuf_ctl.ini x:\ecs\install\rsp\shuf_key.ini

Your desktop and the relevant subdirectories (e.g. Programs) is now populated with all the objects you know from your desktop just after installation. Any objects created during the lifetime of your system prior to recreating your desktop can be found in the folder Previous Desktop which can be found on your new desktop.

Keep in mind that some of the objects in this folder may be broken. Remember you created a new desktop in the first place because the old one was broken...
